The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn for today (Monday, 22 July 2019) to help make the Myall Coast safer from summer fires.
NPWS Acting Area Manager Brett Cann said the burn in Myall Lakes National Park is expected to be completed by Tuesday 23 July 2019.
“The aim of the burn is to stop wildfire spreading within the park or impacting neighbours,” Mr Cann said.
“Starting around 10AM today the proposed burn will be approximately 2.5km south west of Bungwahl near Corrigans Lane and The Lakes Way.
“Smoke may impact on The Lakes Way and Corrigans Lane during the operation.
“Motorists are advised to use caution and drive to conditions when using public roads in the area as fire crews will be working on Corrigans Lane to implement the burn.
“People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.”
“The NPWS takes every opportunity to continue its hazard reduction program year-round,” Mr Cann said.
These burns are some of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.
This hazard reduction burn is part of the NSW Government’s $76 million package over six years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the State’s national parks, where conditions allow.
