Hazard reduction burn in Arakwal National Park 13 July

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn in Arakwal National Park starting Saturday 15 July 2023.

The burn will occur between Ironbark Avenue and the Ocean Street entry and will provide protection to local community assets and improve the Park’s natural values.

Tracks within Arakwal National Parks will be closed to all visitors during the burn including High School walking track, Ironbark walking track, Scott Street walking track and Ocean Street walking track.

Public access to the burn area will be restricted until it is considered safe.

Visitors are advised to check the NPWS Alerts website for up-to-date information on closures as NPWS fire crews will continue to mop up and patrol the burn area into next week.

Hazard reduction burns are essential to reduce bushfire fuel loads to help protect parks, neighbours and communities from future bushfires.

Smoke may be visible from Byron Bay and surrounds. People with asthma or those who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.

People with known health conditions should sign up to get air quality reports, forecasts and alerts via email or SMS and check the RFS website for advice and for regular updates on planned burns.
