Hazard reduction burn in Kangaroo Valley

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning a hazard reduction burn in the Duffy’s Road area, south of the Kangaroo Valley township tomorrow Thursday, 28 March, weather permitting.

NPWS Illawarra Highlands Manager Graham Bush said smoke from the 560 hectare burn is likely to impact Nowra and the surrounding area.

“This burn will help protect the environmental values in the Kangaroo Valley and to limit the potential spread of wildfire off-park,” Mr Bush said.

“The burn is due to begin at about 10am and smoke from the burn program may be visible in Nowra, Kangaroo Valley and Bundanoon areas for a number of days. The hazard reduction burn will build on the previous two burns undertaken earlier in March this year covering approximately 3000 ha in the Kangaroo Valley area,” he said.

“Members of the public driving on Duffy’s road may encounter smoke across the road and fire fighters in the vicinity, and are urged to drive carefully.

“Ruins fire trail and the area of Morton National Park to the west of the trail down to Back run creek will be closed to the public and we thank our neighbours for their understanding.

“People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors,” Mr Bush said.

These burns are some of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service and Fire and Rescue NSW.

This hazard reduction burn is part of the NSW Government’s $76 million package over six years to boost bushfire preparedness and double hazard reduction in the State’s national parks, where conditions allow.
