Hazard reduction burns in Lake Eckersley and Girronba areas in Heathcote National Park

The NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) is planning hazard reduction burns in the Lake Eckersley and Girronba areas of Heathcote National Park from Sunday 10 March 2019, weather permitting.

NPWS area manager Shaun Elwood said the 98 hectare burns are in the central area of the park, alongside the Pipeline Road.

“These burns will help protect the Park and limit the potential spread of wildfire to surrounding private properties,” Mr Elwood said.

“The burns are due to begin at about 9am and motorists are reminded to drive to conditions and bushwalkers/campers/riders must observe warning signs or directions from fire crews.

“Public access to these areas will be closed during the burning operations, including Lake Eckersley trail and campsite, the Pipeline Rd (south of Mirang firetrail and north from Sarah’s Knob), the Battery Causeway, Bullawarring Tk, Goanna Tk, Abaroo Ck Tk, Mooray Tk and Kingfisher Pool campsite.

“Smoke from the burn program may be visible in the Park and adjoining suburbs, including: Woronora Dam picnic area, Burns Rd industrial area, Heathcote, East Heathcote, Engadine, Waterfall and Holsworthy Army areas, depending on wind direction for a number of days.

“We thank our neighbours for their understanding.

“People with asthma or who are susceptible to respiratory problems are advised to keep clear of the area or stay indoors.”

These burns are some of the many hazard reduction operations undertaken by NPWS across NSW each year, many with the assistance of the NSW Rural Fire Service, and Fire and Rescue NSW.
