Always follow the advice of Bushfires NT or the Northern Territory Police, Fire and Emergency Services if your area is under threat.

During periods of heavy smoke, visibility and air quality can be impacted. Common reactions people may experience from heavy smoke includes:

itchy or burning eyessore throatrunny nosecoughing

These common irritations are not serious and can be managed by avoiding prolonged periods outdoors where possible.

Heavy smoke conditions can be more dangerous for people with existing lung and heart conditions. When the air quality drops to ‘poor’ or below, we encourage people with respiratory conditions or illnesses to:

avoid physical outdoor activitystay indoors, with windows and doors closed where possibleif using your air-conditioner, set it to recirculatefollow your asthma action plan and seek immediate medical advice or care if neededcall Triple Zero (000) in an emergency.
