AlburyCity and Wodonga Council have advocated for several key priorities for inclusion in the Regional Deal, while also identifying a range of projects that will be progressed under the Two Cities One Community partnership.
The councils, informed by the consultation undertaken, have pushed for health, tourism and education initiatives, infrastructure upgrades, a focus on river activation and a strategic plan to meet the needs of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community to be included in the Regional Deal agreement.
AlburyCity Mayor Cr Kevin Mack said hearing from the community had been a key part of the Deal’s formation.
“I want to thank those who were a part of the reference groups across a range of sectors that gave their time and their feedback,” Cr Mack said.
“We’ve heard a great many ideas for our region that were put forward by the reference groups.”
Wodonga Mayor Cr Kev Poulton said the partnership with government, community and industry meant the work undertaken would have a positive impact for years to come.
“I want to also express my thanks to all those that provided feedback. Your time and input is greatly appreciated,” Cr Poulton said.
“The work already done means we can use this, to not only inform the Regional Deal but also, where it aligns with our Two Cities One Community Strategic Plan, continue with these priorities and projects.”
“There is so much already happening, under way or in the pipeline, and so we look forward to continuing to work with our community on these projects.
The councils will work together to continue to progress faster rail, cultural facilities, and increased creative and marketing initiatives for the two cities.
The councils are presently working on a joint Sports and Recreation Strategy which will consider ideas raised around our sporting infrastructure, tournament attraction and organisation of sport across the cities.
The draft Albury Wodonga Regional Deal received in-principle endorsement in August. Work continues to refine the package of projects, including determining short and long-term priorities.
The Deal is expected to be formally signed in the final quarter of this year.
The Albury-Wodonga Regional Deal is a collaboration between the Australian Government, NSW Government, Victorian Government, AlburyCity and Wodonga Council.
