Healthy Heart of Victoria kicks off new “Our Outdoor Spaces are Open” campaign with free outdoor exercise classes

Healthy Heart of Victoria, through its Our Outdoor Spaces are Open campaign is offering a range of free outdoor exercise sessions over three weeks commencing May 17 until June 4 at the new outdoor fitness equipment near Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing Centre Kangaroo Flat and at the Ewing Park Oval in Havlin Street West, Bendigo.

The Our Outdoor Spaces are Open campaign aims to inspire people to be more active, more often at Greater Bendigo’s great range of outdoor spaces.

Healthy Heart of Victoria Coordinator Alicia O’Brien said Greater Bendigo boasts many fantastic outdoor spaces across the City that are open for the community to use at all times, for free.

“To encourage residents to be active in our outdoor spaces, Healthy Heart of Victoria is hosting free exercise sessions guided by qualified instructors in Kangaroo Flat and at Ewing Park,” Ms O’Brien said.

“There are general fitness classes and classes for older people with qualified trainers from Gurri Wanyarra Wellbeing entre catering for all levels and abilities.

“We’ve also developed some free training programs for beginner, intermediate and advanced levels that will be available soon to download from www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/outdoorspaces for people to do in their own time using the outdoor fitness equipment in Kangaroo Flat and Long Gully or at any other outdoor recreation space.

“The exercise classes have been scheduled during the day and evening so people can exercise at a time that suits their lifestyle and people can book into as many sessions as they like.

“It’s easy to book into a class online at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au/outdoorspaces or by phoning 0436 816 370. However, numbers are limited so interested people should book in as soon as possible to ensure they don’t miss out.”

Anyone wanting to take part in the free exercise classes should wear appropriate clothing and shoes for exercising and bring along a towel and a water bottle.

There are two types of classes being hosted throughout the campaign. The General Classes are a mix of strength, cardio and body weight exercises targeted at all fitness levels and abilities. Instructors will help make the class fun and engaging by running through a variety of workouts each week to keep participants feeling fit and strong, while improving general fitness and boosting mood.

The Older Adult classes are a strength class suited to older adults or participants that incorporate exercise machines, dumbbells and/or body weight to improve strength and balance and build confidence in everyday activities.

All attendees are required to complete a pre-screening form prior to participating in exercise sessions. Sessions will be cancelled in the event of bad weather or heavy rain. All sessions are COVID safe so if you have any symptoms please stay home.
