Help fight flu

The flu isn’t like the common cold, it can hit quickly and last for a few weeks.

For vulnerable residents, such as children, older adults, people with chronic diseases or a weakened immune system, the flu can have serious and devastating effects.

The flu virus is found in almost invisible droplets from saliva, sneezes, coughs and runny noses. It can travel up to two metres, live on surfaces for up to 48 hours and is spread when people touch an infected surface.

Yarra Ranges Acting Mayor, Richard Higgins, said that everyone should get their flu vaccine to help minimise the virus’ spread.

“For many of our hard working residents, take time off from work or away from family while sick is tough to do, and the flu can effect people for a matter of weeks,” Cr Higgins said.

“Washing your hands regularly, coughing into your elbow and ensuring you and your family are up-to-date with vaccinations are simple ways we can all help to fight the flu.”

If you haven’t had your flu shot yet, it’s not too late. The flu shot is still available through Council’s Community Immunisation sessions.
