Help shape Australia’s Humanitarian Program

Department of Home Affairs

The Australian Government is calling on the community to help shape Australia’s Humanitarian Program for 2022-23.

Last week, the Department of Home Affairs released a discussion paper on the composition of Australia’s 2022-23 Humanitarian Program to inform the public and seek their views on the management of the Program and strengthen its outcomes.

Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Andrew Giles said he was looking forward to the valuable insights of the community, experts, refugees and advocates alike.

“We recognise the importance of engaging with the community to ensure continued support for our Humanitarian Program,” Minister Giles said.

“The world is experiencing its greatest humanitarian need since the Second World War and it is vital that our Humanitarian Program continues to respond to international humanitarian crisis as they arise, and provide appropriate support for the travel and resettlement of refugees and others requiring Australia’s protection.

“This Government is committed to compassionate and flexible Humanitarian and Settlement Programs that positions Australia as a global leader and as one of the world’s most generous contributors to international resettlement efforts.”

The 2022-23 Humanitarian Program is set at a ceiling of 13,750 places, with an additional 4,125 places for Afghan nationals.

To ensure Australia continues to play its part, the Government will work closely with the community and stakeholders as we deliver Australia’s intake.

As part of that process, we invite submissions to inform the development and composition of the Humanitarian Program in 2022-23, to ensure it delivers effective and strong outcomes for people in humanitarian need.

Submissions close at 5pm on 12 August 2022. Australia’s Humanitarian Program 2022-23 discussion paper and information on how to provide a submission is available on the Home Affairs Submissions and discussion papers page.
