Helping more Tasmanians into homes

Roger Jaensch,Minister for Housing

Every Tasmanian needs a roof over their head, which is why the Tasmanian Government is continuing to boost the supply of new homes, right around the State.

Today, it was my pleasure to visit nine more brand new homes in Glenorchy for Tasmanians on our social housing register, developed in partnership with one of our community housing providers.

The homes are a mix of one and two bedroom dwellings, which have supported apprenticeships and jobs during construction and will now go on to assist those experiencing homelessness and housing stress in the State’s south.

The new homes are part of our record investment into social housing that will see 1500 additional homes built by the end of June 2023.

We are also today releasing the quarterly Human Services dashboard to December 2020.

The data shows that while the demand for social housing has continued to increase, applicants are being housed sooner, with the average time to house priority social housing applicants decreasing by 10 weeks over the quarter.

As an additional measure, today I can announce that we will fund another 50 rapid rehousing properties in areas of high demand statewide, including regional areas.

The rapid rehousing properties will provide a boost to transitional housing for those exiting crisis accommodation such as shelters, including adults with children escaping family violence, while they secure longer term accommodation that meets their needs.

This will add to the other initiatives we are undertaking to increase the supply of housing in Tasmania, including developing a ‘whole of housing’ policy framework that addresses the full range of housing market issues across the public and private sector, in line with PESRAC’s recommendations.
