A man has been charged with high-range drink-driving after he allegedly crashed into a ticket machine, boom gate, a street sign and a marked police car in Sydney’s Inner West.
Police have been told the 38-year-old, in a Toyota Rav 4 station wagon, allegedly crashed into a ticket machine and boom gate while exiting a shopping centre carpark on Wynne Road, Burwood, about 9:50pm on Friday (11 June 2021).
A member of the public reported it to police and followed the vehicle through Burwood, Strathfield and Lidcombe.
Officers from Traffic and Highway Patrol Command and Auburn Police Area Command arrived on East Street, Lidcombe, after the driver allegedly mounted a curb and knocked out a give way sign.
The driver allegedly tried to drive away before he crashed into a marked police wagon.
The man was removed from the vehicle and directed to take a roadside breath test, which he allegedly refused.
He was arrested and taken to Auburn Police Station, where he underwent a breath analysis, returning an alleged positive reading of 0.218.
The man was charged with not give particulars to owner of damaged property, drive with high-range PCA, licence expired less than two years before, negligent driving (no death or grievous bodily harm), and refuse or fail to submit to breath test.
He was granted conditional bail to appear before Burwood Local Court on Thursday July 1 2021.
The man was among 237 drivers charged with drink driving during Operation Queen’s Birthday 2021, during the long weekend.
Officers were stationed across NSW for the operation between 12.01am on Friday (11 June 2021) and 11.59pm yesterday (Monday 14 June 2021), with double demerit points in force for speeding, mobile phone, seatbelt and motorcycle/helmet offences.
Across the state, police issued 243 restraint fines, 156 mobile phone fines, and 4610 speeding fines. They also conducted 108,125 breath tests, and 413 drug tests.
Six people died in crashes on roads across the state over the weekend, two people in Southern region, two in South West Metro, one person in North West Metro, and one person in Northern.

About 11.15pm yesterday (Monday 14 June 2021), police attempted to stop the driver of a Toyota Corolla, heading west on Hume Highway, Yagoona. When the driver allegedly failed to stop, police commenced a pursuit, through Yagoona, Villawood and Fairfield East. The driver allegedly reached speeds of 120km/h in 50km/h zone before stopping in Burrows Place, Chester Hill, and allegedly fleeing on foot. Following a short foot pursuit, he was arrested. During a search of the car, police located a bottle of liquid suspected to be GBL and methamphetamine. The man, aged 34, was taken to Bankstown Hospital for mandatory testing before being taken to Bankstown Police Station. He was charged with police pursuit, exceed speed limit 45km/h, possess prohibited drug, and not stop at stop line at red light. He was refused bail to appear in Bankstown Local Court today (Tuesday 15 June 2021).
Police stopped the driver of a Honda CRV travelling west on Princes Street, Cundletown, near Taree, after seeing a child allegedly seated unrestrained between the passenger and driver seats, about 8.15am on Sunday (13 June 2021). Officers spoke to the driver and allege the 12-year-old child had moved to the back seat but was not wearing a seatbelt. A three-year-old girl in a child’s seat was also not allegedly retrained. Police inspected the vehicle and found all four tyres were worn, with one split on the inside with wire protruding. The driver, a 33-year-old man, was issued fines and a defect notice.
About 11.15pm on Sunday (13 June 2021), the driver of a Mitsubishi Express van was stopped on Willow Street, Tamworth, for a random breath test. He allegedly refused to comply with the test and attempted to leave the scene before a short struggle with police occurred. He then complied with the breath test and allegedly returned a positive result. The man, aged 40, was arrested after another struggle with officers. The man was taken to Tamworth Police Station, where he refused a secondary blood analysis test. He was charged with resist or hinder police officer in the execution of duty, assault police officer in execution of duty, and refuse or fail to submit to breath analysis. He was refused bail and appeared before Tamworth Local Court today (Tuesday 15 July 2021), where he was granted conditional bail to appear before the same court on Tuesday 27 July 2021.
About 2pm on Saturday (12 June 2021) police from Batemans Bay Highway Patrol stopped the driver of a Suzuki Swift travelling east on the Kings Highway, Braidwood, after checks revealed the vehicle was allegedly stolen. Police subjected the driver, a 28-year-old woman, to a roadside breath and drug test, which was negative for alcohol but allegedly returned a preliminary positive result for methamphetamine. The woman had been disqualified from driving until 2031. She was arrested and taken Batemans Bay Police Station for a secondary oral fluid test. She was charged with take and drive conveyance without consent of owner, goods in custody, drive motor vehicle during disqualification period, and drive vehicle illicit drug present in blood. She was refused bail and appeared before Wollongong Local Court on Sunday (13 June 2021), where she was formally refused bail to appear in the same court today (Tuesday 15 June 2021).
