The City of Hobart is today celebrating completion of the second stage of the New Town Precinct Upgrade – a more than $1.5 million project that has created a true commercial and community heart for inner-city Hobart.
Work on stage two of the New Town Precinct upgrade began in early 2023 and took eight months to complete.
The majority of the works were funded through Phase 3 of the Australian Government’s Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program, with $1.37 million in funding provided for the upgrade.
The LRCI Program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across the nation, supporting jobs and delivering benefits for local communities.
Additional support through the Australian Government’s Road Safety Program, jointly funded by the Tasmanian Government has also contributed to build the important pedestrian crossings on New Town Road.
The progression of stage three works for this project, which include improvements to the Roope Street intersection and surrounding areas, will be considered by the City of Hobart in future financial years.
