Homelessness Week – Raising Awareness

Wyndham City is committed to raising awareness of the challenges confronting people without stable accommodation during Homelessness Week.

Homelessness Week runs between 1-7 August and aims to shine a spotlight on the impact of homelessness around Australia and help educate communities on how they can make a difference.

Wyndham City staff are assisting in the production of ‘dignity packs’, filled with toiletries to assist vulnerable people during their time of hardship.

In Australia, there are more than 116,000 people experiencing homelessness on any given night.

Wyndham City Mayor Cr Peter Maynard said: “Wyndham City Community Centre staff have brought to fruition a great idea of doing something small that will make a difference to people facing unstable accommodation.”

“They came up with the idea of creating dignity packs for men and women and they reached out to the Wyndham community and sought donations.”

“A fantastic idea that gives vulnerable people experiencing homelessness one less thing to worry about. Providing dignity packs – gives back a little bit of dignity.”

“Providing dignity packs is a small way we can make a difference.”

The amazing amount of donations received was overwhelming, with many large businesses donating toiletries, blankets and gift vouchers.

There are plenty of essential toiletries to make up dignity packs that are male and female specific. The packs will have a range of toiletry products and sanitary items for the females.

A team will come together from all of Wyndham’s Community Centres to pack the dignity packs. The dignity packs will be distributed to all Council managed and Community Managed Community Centres and available for those in need to pick up Monday to Friday, 9am and 5pm. We will also work with local community service organisations to ensure the packs reach the people that need them most.
