Hospitality industry competing on national stage

Jeremy Rockliff, Minister for Tourism and Hospitality

The Tasmanian Liberal Government is investing in our world-leading hospitality sector to continue to grow our economy, support jobs and drive visitation.

Premier and Minister for Tourism and Hospitality, Jeremy Rockliff, visited Rude Boy to celebrate its nomination in the Australian Bartender Magazine awards for Rum Bar of the Year.

“Rude Boy is one of the many examples of Tasmania’s hard-working, successful hospitality businesses providing exceptional service and creating unforgettable experiences,” the Premier said.

“I wish Rude Boy and the other 11 Tasmanian businesses nominated in the national awards the best of luck.”

The hospitality industry is an important part of the State’s tourism ecology and is part of the lifeblood of our regions.

“The industry supports more than 8 per cent of the State’s employment and injects over $700 million into the economy each year” the Premier said.

“In the year ending March 2023, visitor spending was $3.96 billion – the highest annual visitor spend on record.

“The hospitality sector was one of the most impacted by the pandemic, but we have continued to deliver on our long-term plan to support businesses.

“We know how important our growing visitor economy is and that’s why we have committed $12 million to back immediate priorities outlined in the recently released 2030 Visitor Economy Strategy.

“Our investment in Tasmania has seen our economic recovery out of COVID lead the nation, topping the CommSec State of the States for 12 out of the past 14 quarters.

“That is a remarkable change from when the disastrous Labor-Green government left Tasmania languishing at the bottom of the tables.

“Our Government continues to grow our economy and create jobs to make Tasmania the best place to live, work and raise a family.”
