IEU members support AEU members striking to protect profession

Independent Education Union - Queensland and Northern Territory (IEU-QNT)

The union representing over 17,000 teachers and staff in Northern Territory and Queensland non-government schools supports the strike action of public sector teachers in the Territory taking place tomorrow (Friday, 19 August 2022).

Independent Education Union – Queensland and Northern Territory (IEU-QNT) Branch Secretary Terry Burke said IEU members stood in solidarity with the Australian Education Union – Northern Territory (AEU NT) members striking in response to the NT Government’s four-year pay freeze and its impact on recruiting and retaining teachers into the territory.

“Teacher shortages, unsustainable workloads and uncompetitive wages are issues for teachers across the country and the Northern Territory is certainly not an exception,” Mr Burke said.

“This is our profession and we have to protect it.

“Tomorrow’s action by AEU members is about doing just that.

“IEU members fully support AEU members in their action and call on the NT government to provide a pay offer that will enable its employees to deal with current cost of living issues and inflation,” Mr Burke said.
