How can universities move from good intentions to meaningful action on diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI)? The DEI in Higher Education Toolkit, co-created within the NeurotechEU alliance, offers a practical and engaging answer.
Designed for students, educators and support staff, the DEI toolkit brings together interactive learning materials, reflective exercises and concrete examples to support inclusive practices across teaching, learning and everyday university life. Its aim is to raise awareness, build a shared language around DEI, and empower participants to actively contribute to more equitable academic environments.
Update from the Implementation Phase
Released at the end of 2025, the toolkit is currently in its implementation phase across NeurotechEU partner universities, with students, educators, and support staff actively using the content and sharing feedback. This phase plays a crucial role in ensuring that the toolkit is relevant, accessible and impactful across diverse institutional and cultural contexts.
Early feedback highlights the strength of combining theoretical foundations with practical scenarios and reflective questions that connect directly to participants’ own study or work environments. Participants have particularly valued the way the toolkit encourages critical self‑reflection while remaining grounded in real academic situations.
Sebastian Jung, a student at the University of Bonn, reflects on the balance the toolkit strikes between learning and self‑reflection: “The DEI Toolkit did an amazing job of presenting the core DEI principles – and why they matter. Not only does it have a great mix of reading and putting your knowledge to the test, it also makes you question your own thoughts critically.”
From a support services perspective, the toolkit has also been welcomed as a meaningful resource for reflective practice. Jóhanna María Vignir, Career Guidance Counsellor at Reykjavík University, notes: “The toolkit was a valuable reminder that my own experiences are not universal. From a career guidance perspective, it supports reflective practice and helps deepen awareness of how prejudice and structural barriers can shape people’s educational and career paths. By encouraging openness in both self‑reflection and dialogue, it helps build the trust and safety needed for individuals to feel comfortable sharing their experiences.”
