More than 250 swimmers from Australia and Asia will descend on Perth this weekend for the inaugural Asia-Pac Super Splash swim meet at HBF Stadium.
Swimmers, coaches and officials from China, Singapore and Malaysia will join the Australian contingent to take part in events catering for ages nine and over.
The event is supported by the McGowan Government’s $500,000 Asian Engagement Through Sport funding program – which aims to develop closer ties with our northern neighbours by linking Western Australian sports with their Asian counterparts.
The program encourages Asian sports organisations to bring their competitions, training camps and other events to WA.
The State has an abundance of advantages to offer visiting Asian sports – including world‑renowned coaching expertise, world‑class facilities, ideal weather and close proximity to the region.
The program is designed to help boost visitation and events tourism from Asia by promoting WA as an offshore training and events base for sports.
Swimming WA received a two-year grant from the Asian Engagement Through Sport funding program to help it stage the Super Splash in 2019 and 2020.
As stated by Sport and Recreation Minister Mick Murray:
“I’d like to welcome our visiting competitors from China, Singapore, Malaysia and other parts of Australia to Perth for the inaugural Asia-Pac Super Splash.
“Swimming WA has been enthusiastic about stepping up their engagement with our northern neighbours – sharing their expertise and offering local swimmers the chance to compete against international competition.
“HBF Stadium is a world-class venue and I encourage Western Australians to come along and see some great racing action in the indoor pool.
“Just as important is the opportunity to build closer sporting, coaching and community ties with our nearby Asian neighbours.
“Western Australia has so much to offer our Asian counterparts when it comes to sport – including top‑level coaches, world‑class facilities and great weather.
“The Asian Engagement Through Sport program is helping to promote WA as the ideal place for Asian countries to bring training camps, competitions and other events – boosting visitation, events tourism, jobs and the economy.”
