Incident update – Kangaroo Island / Duncan, South Australia

Please see the following INCIDENT UPDATE from the CFS for the Duncan Bushfire on Kangaroo Island.

The Coopers Road fire at Duncan is not yet contained but the fire’s spread has been slowed.

The fire has now burnt approximately 15,000 ha and has a perimeter of about 112 kilometres.

The fire is still moving:

In a northerly direction towards the coast.

In a westerly direction towards Snug Cove road.

In a southerly direction towards Colmans road, Berrymans road, North Coast road and the Playford Highway.

In an easterly direction towards King Georges road, Mays road and Ahwans road.

There are still active spots of fire within the fireground and there has been a number of reported flare up’s in the Middle River area during the day.

Plans are currently being developed to secure the fire edge over the coming week. More firefighters arrived on the island late last night and more firefighters are traveling to the island from the mainland first thing today to assist the local crews.

Yesterday crews undertook a very successful burning process to remove unburnt pockets of vegetation within the fireground and they also conducted a backburn on the eastern side of the fire (south of Middle River). This generated an increased level of smoke from the fireground but has helped to secure the fireground and reduce the chance of an escape if conditions change during the week ahead.

Power has been isolated across the fire ground to ensure the safety of emergency service personnel working in the area.

To ensure your safety, and that of firefighters and other emergency personnel, please do not enter the area unless necessary. Hazards may include reduced visibility due to smoke, fallen trees blocking roads and emergency vehicles operating in the area.

Residents in the area are advised to remain vigilant and to continue checking and following your Bushfire Survival Plan.
