On the 60th anniversary of the Antarctic
Treaty System the Federal Government has announced further funding to
strengthen Australia’s engagement in Antarctica.
Additional funding of $58.8 million over the next two and a half years has been allocated to the Davis Aerodrome Project.
The new funding recognises the project is of an unprecedented
scale and complexity, requiring a thorough and rigorous planning process.
The Australian Antarctic Division is required to seek environmental approvals for
the project under the Antarctic Treaty (Environment Protection) Act 1980 and
the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.
If approved, the Davis
aerodrome will deliver a significant capability boost, revolutionise our
scientific activities and enhance Australia’s leadership in East Antarctica.
