Indigenous Protected Areas Mapping Tool

Dept of Climate Change, Energy, Environment & Water

This video shows you how to use the Indigenous Protected Areas (IPA) mapping tool to map your project site as part of a grant application.

You’ll learn how to:

  • draw and edit your proposed project site on the map
  • save your map and generate the correct link for your application
  • download and upload KML files if you need to edit your map later
  • access help and support if you run into technical issues

At the end of the video, you’ll know how to save your final map link in a Word document and attach it to your grant application.

This video is designed for applicants applying for Indigenous Protected Areas funding who need to map their proposed project site accurately.

0:00 Welcome.

0:01 In this video, we’ll guide you through mapping your project site for your grant application.

0:06 The first step is to find your project location on the map.

0:10 You can do this by typing the address or the name of a nearby town or street into the search box at the top left of the screen.

0:17 The tool will suggest a list of locations.

0:19 Click the option that’s closest to your project site to adjust the map.

0:24 Click the hand tool at the top of the screen.

0:27 Click and hold your mouse while dragging the map left, right, up or down.

0:32 Release the mouse when the area of interest is centred.

0:35 You can also use the controls found in the bottom right of the screen.

0:40 Zoom in as close as possible for accuracy.

0:43 To zoom in or out, use the plus and minus buttons in the bottom right corner or scroll your mouse wheel.

0:49 The map includes several context layers showing already protected areas.

0:53 To show or hide A layer, click the square next to its name in the layer list on the right side of the screen.

1:00 You can also hide the legend if you prefer a cleaner view.

1:03 To switch the base to satellite imagery, click the white satellite button below the map title.

1:09 To return to the default map view, click Map.

1:12 To draw your project site, start by clicking the drawing tool at the top of the screen.

1:18 Your cursor will change to a cross.

1:20 Click once to set your first point.

1:22 Move to the next corner and click again.

1:25 Continue clicking at each corner until you return to the starting point.

1:30 This closes the shape and creates your project area.

1:33 A popup will appear showing the area and perimeter.

1:37 Add a title for your site here and press OK To adjust your site.

1:42 Click the hand tool.

1:44 White dots move main points, grey dots allow finer adjustments.

1:48 Click and drag to reshape.

1:51 To delete a shape, click inside the shaded area, then click the red Delete button.

1:56 You can also start over by clicking Delete All Mapping at the bottom left.

2:00 Warning deleting cannot be undone.

2:04 Once you’re happy with your mapping, click Save Mapping.

2:07 Copy the map link and paste it into a Word document.

2:11 Save this Word document and attach it to your application.

2:15 Only use Copy the URL from the popup screen that appears when you click Save Mapping.

2:20 The link in your browser address bar will not save the mapped area.

2:24 You can also use this link to return to your mapping and make edits if required.

2:29 To do so, you copy and paste the link into your browser.

2:33 After editing, click Save Mapping so that the changes are saved.

2:38 You can download your map as a KML file for your records by pressing the blue download button.

2:44 You can also use the downloaded KML to edit your project area.

2:48 You can upload a KML file by clicking Load from File KML at the bottom left.

2:53 A file navigation box will appear.

2:56 Select your file, click open and wait for the message Successfully loaded KML file.

3:02 To edit the KML file area, use the hand tool to drag the points to their new location.

3:08 Make sure to save the link into a Word document for your application.

3:13 The Help button at the bottom of the screen will open a Quick guide on using the mapping tool that can be printed.
