A 22 year old male bushwalker has been rescued after falling and injuring himself near Hibbs Bay on the state’s west coast today.
Around 11am today, an EPIRB activation was received from a walking party who were in the Hibbs Bay area on the West Coast of Tasmania, some 47km south of Strahan.
A 22 year old male walker had fallen down a 4m cliff and received injuries to his hip, rendering him unable to walk. One member of the five person party used a satellite phone and contacted emergency services for assistance.
The Westpac Rescue Helicopter was dispatched flying through unfavourable weather conditions and reached the injured walker around 1pm. The man was retrieved by the helicopter crew, stabilised and then flown to the Royal Hobart Hospital for additional medical treatment.
Inspector Shane LeFevre said: “The walking party were well prepared for the rugged west coast and the carrying of an EPIRB and satellite phone was invaluable in gaining medical assistance to the injured person.”
