INSPECTORS VISIT 44 WORKSITES IN ILLAWARRA

SafeWork NSW and NSW Fair Trading

NSW Fair Trading and SafeWork NSW inspectors focused their attention on the local construction industry during surprise quality and safety checks at sites across the Illawarra this week.

Executive Director of Compliance Matt Press said inspectors audited construction standards, including verifying trade licenses, checking building quality and identifying safety issues.

“SafeWork inspectors issued nine fines and 73 improvement notices for safety issues such as lack of protection around voids and dry cutting of silica containing material,” Mr Press said.

“SafeWork inspectors also issued 19 prohibition notices for clear safety breaches forcing work to stop until the risks were managed.

“Building quality checks by Fair Trading inspectors resulted in six penalty infringement notices being issued, the discovery of two unlicensed tradespeople and fire, electrical and waterproofing concerns at one site.”

Mr Press said the region is buzzing with building activity and ensuring good quality work means projects are built right the first time improving public confidence in the construction industry.

“Workers should not have to choose between risking their life and getting the job done so rigorous compliance visits will continue to drive home to developers, builders and contractors the level of construction integrity and safety expected of all residential developments across the State,” Mr Press said.

“We will maintain a full-time presence throughout the region and continue to hold high visibility inspections to ensure local issues are rectified.

“Inspectors will continue to put a spotlight on industry accountability this year with thorough worksite compliance action across NSW.

“Expect a visit anytime and anywhere whether a building site is in a major metropolitan city or a regional community.

“There is a definite link between poor safety and poor quality in construction and the safety and building regulators will continue to work together closely to improve standards across the board.”
