International students arrivals double, spur economic growth

More than double the number of international students arrived in Australia this July when compared to the same time last year – fuelling the nation’s economic prosperity and growth.

The latest data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics confirmed 131,640 international student arrivals in July 2023 – an increase of 60,420 students compared to July 2022. Provisional estimates indicate a further 50,630 students arrived this August.

“The doubling in student arrivals is a testament to the quality of our world-class education system which continues to draw students from over 144 countries,” Universities Australia Chief Executive Catriona Jackson said.

“Our campuses, classrooms and communities are enriched by the significant cultural, social and economic contributions these students make.

“And while we’re encouraged by the progress made in the recovery of international education, there’s still work to be done with student arrivals sitting 8.5 per cent lower than pre-COVID levels recorded in July 2019.

“Our international education system is one of the best in the world, and we must do all we can to build on its recovery.”
