Investing in our Community: $2M Joint Projects Commence – Lakeside Dog Park

The Territory Labor Government is working with City of Darwin to deliver 14 community priority projects as part of a $2 million Joint Projects initiative to improve the amenity, accessibility and useability of public spaces.

These community projects have also helped create local jobs for Territorians.

The Lakeside Dog Park is the first of 14 projects due to be completed before June 30, 2020. It will see fully fenced play areas for large and small dogs, dog water troughs and play elements, dog disposal bags, along with shade trees and seating.

Other projects include new toilet facilities in Jingili, Rapid Creek and Cullen Bay, along with playground and park upgrades in Tiwi, Anula, Leanyer and Wanguri.

Community consultation for the Dog Park will begin 26 February until 17 March 2020.

As stated by Minister for Health and Member for Nightcliff, Natasha Fyles:

“Our Government is delivering on priority local projects the community has identified, in partnership with City of Darwin – projects that also create lots of local jobs for Territorians.

“Dog parks are a great place for owners to socialise their dogs. The fully fenced Lakeside Dog Park will allow pet owners to give their dogs off leash time in a safe space.

“The dog park will add to the liveability of the area and is a real win for pet owners who want more opportunities to exercise their dogs in the northern suburbs.”

As stated by Member for Casuarina, Lauren Moss MLA:

“Many local residents have much loved pets and will be pleased with the addition of a local dog park. I welcome Council’s continued consultation, and the shared commitment to make these grass roots projects a reality.

“In particular families in Tiwi will be thrilled with upgrades to a park in desperate need of an upgrade.”

As stated by Darwin Lord Mayor, Kon Vatskalis:

“City of Darwin Elected Members and Northern Territory Members of Parliament have worked closely for many months to identify and prioritise projects that will deliver great outcomes for our community.

“Pet ownership in Darwin is very high – we have more than 8,000 registered dogs in our city – and I expect the dog park will be very well utilised!”

“The community have been lobbying for a Dog Park for some time and this facility will provide pet owners with a safe and attractive area to exercise their dogs.”
