Revelations of wage theft from private training provider Foundry highlights the need for the Government to invest in TAFE as Tasmania’s comprehensive public provider of skills and training.
Shadow Minister for TAFE, University and Skills, Michelle O’Byrne, said she urged the Government to invest in TAFE over partnering with for-profit training organisations.
“Foundry’s failure to pay workers entitlements does little to instill confidence from industry in our VET sector,” Ms O’Byrne said.
“Wage theft makes it even harder for Tasmanians to make ends meet, especially at a time when so many Tasmanians are facing financial hardship. These are challenging times for everyone but no-one should have to worry about whether they are being paid properly.
Ms O’Byrne said new revelations of wage theft are a reminder that no business is above the law.
“Students need confidence in training providers and that means knowing they will receive a qualification and that the company providing it is behaving ethically.
“The Liberal government has made a habit of investing in private training organisations to the detriment of TAFE. If the Government is investing in any private enterprise then it needs to ensure they are behaving legally.
“It’s time for the Government to adopt Labor’s policy and work with us to rebuild TAFE alongside business.
“Tasmania’s TAFE system has the potential to be the training engine room of the economy, driving qualifications and employment in a post-pandemic society.
“It’s vital that industry has faith in our VET sector to deliver outcomes for them and for Tasmanian jobseekers.
“Labor is committed to work with industry and the education and training sector to ensure Tasmanians have the best possible pathways to secure, well-paid jobs.”
