Ipswich residents urged to report suspicious activity

With the current high price for copper and other precious metals, police are encouraging people who live in or own businesses in Ipswich to be vigilant with security and report suspicious activity following a series of thefts.

Since October, public and private properties have been specifically targeted for copper wire.

The locations targeted include sport clubs, energy infrastructure and private residences.

“It is apparent offenders are targeting sporting fields and public spaces for copper wire,” Officer in Charge of Ipswich Police Station, Senior Sergeant Liz Burns-Hutchison said.

“Copper wire can be difficult to trace and highly valuable at second-hand recycling outlets.

“Thieves may mistakenly think electrical wires are an easy target, but removing cabling is very dangerous for offenders, energy workers and the community.

“We also ask people who live or have businesses in Ipswich, to be vigilant with the security of their properties and to please report any suspicious activity they witness, including discarded electrical insulation.”

Police investigate all complaints to find those removing cabling or knowingly receiving stolen property.

Offenders can face arrest and serious criminal charges, including burglary and stealing, with significant penalties for these offences.
