More than 1,500 athletes from across the country descended on the Sydney International Regatta Centre in Penrith over the weekend for the long-awaited return of the Qatar Airways IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney.

Supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW, the event features a 1.9km swim within the Regatta Centre, a 90km bike ride and a 21.1km flat and fast run around the venue, marking the event’s first instalment since 2019 due to the pandemic.

Minister for Tourism Ben Franklin said the return of IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney would provide a major boost to the local visitor economy.

“IRONMAN 70.3 is an incredibly popular event for local and visiting athletes and I commend the event organisers for their perseverance in bringing it back after a difficult three-year hiatus,” Mr Franklin said.

“Delivering major events like IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney is a key pillar in our vision to make Sydney and NSW the major events capital and premier visitor economy of the Asia Pacific.”

Minister for Transport, Veterans and Western Sydney David Elliott said hosting major events such as IRONMAN 70.3 delivered a significant boost to Western Sydney businesses.

“Sporting events that attract international interest not only highlight the best of Western Sydney hospitality, tourism and sporting facilities but also gives local communities an opportunity for a first hand glimpse into the world of these elite athletes,” Mr Elliott said.

Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said Penrith is proud to host one of the toughest races in Australia, showcasing iconic local facilities.

“Penrith is home to some of the most unique attractions in NSW and major events like this play a significant role in driving visitation to Western Sydney and growing the local economy,” Mr Ayres said.

The event featured an IRONKIDS race on Saturday 24 September, with children aged between 7 and 13 taking part in a run/bike/run event format of varying distances for age groups. Registrations for the IRONKIDS race are still available.
