Story Behind Our Weather Calendar’s October Image

Stacked flat, circular lenticular clouds hover above a patchwork of rolling green and golden fields beneath a brooding sky.

Andrew Thomas’s photograph is the 2027 Australian Weather Calendar’s October photo

When Andrew spotted the clouds on his routine morning shoot, he knew where he had to go.

Years of shooting in Tasmania’s north had sharpened his local knowledge, and once he got to the lookout, the clouds took him the rest of the way.

Andrew Thomas has spent years chasing remarkable landscapes and weather across Australia and overseas, but his sixth consecutive image in the Weather Calendar was captured less than half an hour from his home in Sheffield, Tasmania.

“I’ve become pretty adept at judging the local conditions and knowing where to go,” he said.

The photograph features striking cloud formations rolling across the sky above the rich green farmland near Sheffield.

Having moved to Tasmania from Victoria six years ago, he quickly fell in love with the state’s landscapes and changing weather.

“We moved into an area that is just so full of opportunities for photography,” he said.

“I really haven’t left the state in those six years because there’s been enough around here locally to keep me occupied.”

The image came together after Andrew noticed the clouds on the horizon while out looking for good light.

“I knew when I was coming home that I had something special,” he said.

“Clouds can make the most boring view look amazing.”

Andrew proves that sometimes the best photographs can be found just down the road.
