All eyes will be on the Coolum Beach break on September 7 & 8 as Australia’s toughest IronMen and IronWomen steel themselves for the qualifying rounds of the 2019/20 Nutri-Grain elite series.
The Surf Life Saving Australia event will see more than 150 of the fittest surf athletes on earth battling it out at Coolum Beach for the 12 remaining spots in the upcoming men’s and women’s elite Iron Series, which kicks off in October.
Tourism, Sport and Major Events Portfolio Councillor Jason O’Pray said the Sunshine Coast is thrilled to be hosting qualifying rounds as part of the 2019/20 Nutri-Grain IronMan and IronWoman Series.
“We are prime territory for elite surf life saving and this competition will be fierce. Bring it on.”
Alexandra Headland surf life-saver Tiarrn Raymond has received and accepted automatic qualification into the series while six fellow club members and 11 Maroochydore club members will be competing in Coolum for a position in the upcoming rounds.
Maroochydore Surf Life Saving Club coach Nathan Grieg said that 16 weeks of preparation, training three times a day, six days a week was a huge commitment from his team.
“Experienced competitors Lincoln Dews, Tiarnee Massie, Ella Brown and Adam and Matthew Palmer are strong contenders, with the balance of the team set to experience this highly competitive event for the first time.”
This elite sporting event is supported by Coolum Beach Surf Life Saving Club and Sunshine Coast Council. It brings many participants from outside of the region, and provides a great opportunity to showcase Coolum as a sensational destination.
