It’s time for storytime

It’s time for Stonnington Libraries to get into National Simultaneous Storytime – in a celebration of reading and literacy for children.

Our libraries are again proud to participate in this year’s National Simultaneous Storytime – a free event that celebrates and promotes the value of books, reading and literacy among children.

Each year, a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously around the country. This year’s book, chosen by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is The Speedy Sloth by award-winning author Rebecca Young with illustrations by award-winning children’s book illustrator Heath McKenzie.

Stonnington councillors Mayor Cr Klisaris, Deputy Mayor Cr Sehr, Cr Hely and Cr Batagol are excited to be involved in National Simultaneous Storytime sessions at our libraries and will join the community to read the book.

Storytime participants including children and their parents, grandparents or guardians, will delight in the opportunity to enjoy The Speedy Sloth, plus other stories and songs at the library.

The Speedy Sloth was chosen for its positive storyline, appeal to a modern and diverse audience, and suitability for reading aloud (language and length).

Drop in at Grattan Gardens Community Centre (for Prahran Square Library) and Toorak/South Yarra Library on Wednesday, 24 May at 10.30-11am for fun times at storytime.

These storytime sessions are best suited for children aged three–five years.

Sessions are free and bookings are not required, visit the library website

About National Simultaneous Storytime

The event held annually by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), encourages more young Australians to read and enjoy books. Every year, a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator, is read simultaneously around the country.

In its 23rd year, the vibrant, fun event aims to promote reading and literacy among young children, using an Australian children’s book that explores age-appropriate themes, and addresses key learning areas of the National Curriculum for Foundation to Year 6.
