Jumping Jack Flash off to flying start

A talented Wodonga teenager is hitting the ground running in the next stage of his quest for athletics success, with financial assistance from Wodonga Council

Thirteen-year-old track and field star Jack Abbruzzese was presented with a Young Achievers’ Scheme award at last night’s Wodonga Council meeting, to help him represent Victoria in the National Track and Field Championships in Sydney from March 26 to April 3.

The award recognises Jack’s excellence in his sport and comes with financial support of $400 to help cover the costs of travelling and competing.

The Catholic College Wodonga student qualified for the national titles after winning three silver medals at the Victorian Track and Field Championships.

In the under-14 category, Jack is now ranked fourth in Australia in 90-metre hurdles, and also ranks in the top ten for the 200-metre hurdles and triple jump.

Like many young people, Jack has been affected by the Covid-19 pandemic, which has caused the cancellation of numerous competitions, so the council support comes at a great time for the talented teen as he works towards representing his city and state on the national stage.

Jack says he’s excited at the opportunity to compete against Australia’s best and hopes ‘to be competitive, achieve personal-bests and experience an event that few get to attend’.

The Young Achievers’ Scheme offers financial assistance to young people to develop skills, complete, perform or represent Wodonga in their chosen endeavour.
