SA Police have today announced that the death of Kensington Gardens woman has been declared a Major Crime and are appealing for anyone with information that may assist the investigation to come forward.
Ann Marie Smith, 54, who suffered from cerebral palsy, died in the Royal Adelaide Hospital on Monday 6 April 2020 after being admitted with severe ulcerated and infected tissue, and other serious illnesses that had developed while being cared for in her own home.
On 5 April 2020, Ann’s carer called an ambulance due to her having severe pressure sores that ultimately required major surgery. Sadly, Ann died the following day.
Ms Smith died of profound septic shock, multiple organ failure from severe pressure sores, cerebral palsy and was also found to be suffering from malnutrition.
Investigators attended Ms Smith’s home at 1 Bradman Circuit, Kensington Gardens and found her living conditions to be unacceptable.
Detective Superintendent Des Bray said Major Crime investigators are carrying out a simultaneous criminal alongside a coronial investigation as a result of a complaint being made to the Health and Community Services Complaints Commissioner about the level of care provided to Ann.
“Ann lived alone and had a full-time carer and was unable to walk or take care of herself.
“Despite living in a nice house, Ann died in disgusting and degrading circumstances,” he said.
“This is a tragic case,” Detective Superintendent Bray said.
“Today I’m appealing for anyone who knew or had seen Ann in recent years to call Crime Stoppers.
“Anyone with information about her life, the support or the care that she was provided would be extremely helpful for investigators.”
