La Trobe rises in QS subject rankings

La Trobe University has cemented its status as a global leader in the 2022 QS World University subject rankings.

This year has seen an 82 per cent increase in the number of La Trobe subjects ranked in the world’s top 300 – with 20 appearing this year compared to 11 in 2021.

Sports-related subjects remain La Trobe’s highest performer, retaining their spot in the world’s top 50.

Of those subjects that have risen most strongly, Anthropology has entered the top 100 for the first time, while Linguistics, Anatomy and Physiology, Hospitality and Leisure Management, and Sociology are now all ranked in the top 150.

Archaeology and Nursing continue to hold their positions in the top 100 in the world, and Education has moved back into the top 200.

La Trobe University Vice-Chancellor Professor John Dewar AO said he was pleased to see sports-related subjects remain a key performer for the University.

“This year we officially opened our La Trobe Sports Park, home to the Matildas and a purpose-built facility for teaching, research and community participation,” Professor Dewar said.

“La Trobe is very invested in sport, allied health and exercise science and it’s pleasing to see this reflected in the rankings once again.”

Professor Dewar said the strong performance of a broad range of subjects across many disciplines is testament to La Trobe’s commitment to research and teaching.

“It’s fantastic to see subjects from wide-ranging disciplines across the arts and humanities, life sciences and social sciences perform so well, in many cases rising up within the highest bands, and in some cases entering them for the first time,” Professor Dewar said.

“This reflects the true breadth and quality of research produced by our talented academic staff, and their strong commitment to educating the next generation of professionals.”

The QS World University Rankings by Subject ranks the world’s top universities in individual subject areas, covering 51 subjects. Based on research citations, academic reputation, and graduate employer survey responses, among other factors, the rankings help prospective students identify the world’s leading schools in their chosen fields.
