Labor must step up support for disaster affected communities

Liberal Party Victoria

Today, Victorian Opposition Leader, John Pesutto, joined local Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, to visit Mirboo North to hear directly from local residents and emergency service workers and volunteers.

Mr Pesutto and Mr O’Brien were joined by Members for Eastern Victoria Melina Bath and Renee Health to see firsthand the magnitude of the clean-up and recovery challenge faced by this community.

With widespread damage to local community infrastructure and one resident facing $60,000 in costs simply to clear their property, it is clear the Allan Government need to increase support payments to help communities like Mirboo North recover.

Leader of the Opposition, John Pesutto, said: “Hearing from locals in Mirboo North today it is clear the support payments announced by Labor are well short of where they need to be.

“Small packages that leave people shortchanged are simply not fair and Jacinta Allan needs to step up and provide genuine financial support and a plan to get these communities back on their feet.”

Member for Gippsland South, Danny O’Brien, said: “Mirboo North has been hit by something that is hard to describe and this community needs a clean-up package.

“Our local community can’t deal with the scale of the clean-up and we need a package of financial support measures and a coordinated response from Government to help with the thousands of tonnes of trees and debris left in the wake of this storm.”
