Labor’s Buy Local policy will be truly local

Tasmanian Labor
  • Liberals have failed local businesses by taking business off shore
  • Government unable to distinguish between Tasmanian and international businesses
  • Public funds should be spent to benefit Tasmanians
  • Labor’s Tasmania
First – Buy Local policy will direct government business to truly Tasmanian
business after an outright failure by the Gutwein Government.

    The policy is part
of Labor’s fully costed jobs plan, Working for Tasmania,
designed to stimulate the economy, foster business growth and get Tasmanians
    into secure jobs.

    Shadow Minister for
Consumer Affairs Jenna Butler said every dollar spent by government should be
    delivering benefits to Tasmanians.

    “But what we have
seen over the past seven years under the Liberals is a blatant breach of their
promise to buy local,” Ms Butler said.

    “The Liberal
government’s Buy Local policy doesn’t make a distinction between a Tasmanian
owned and operated business and a huge global corporation that’s set up an
    office in Hobart.

    “Under the
Liberal’s policy companies like IBM are classified as Tasmanian.”

    Ms Butler said
every year tens of millions of dollars go to international or interstate
    businesses.

    “That’s unfair and
it’s unacceptable. And that’s why Labor will implement a genuine Tasmania
    First, Buy Local policy.

    “Labor will ensure
that more money from government contracts stays in Tasmania.

“In addition, the Buy Local policy will apply to all government businesses – not just departments – to deliver the greatest possible benefit to Tasmanian businesses and Tasmanian jobs.

“Labor wants Tasmanian businesses and Tasmanian workers to receive the greatest possible benefit from government spending.”
