Labor’s power vacuum 5 October

Members,

Tasmanians continue to be let down by a Labor Opposition intent on misleading the public on power policy.

Minister for Energy and Renewables Nick Duigan has reassured Tasmanians the Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering the renewable energy the State needs while ensuring Tasmania has the lowest power prices in the nation.

“Labor’s thought bubble price cap proposal would drive-up power prices, send energy retailers to the wall, cost jobs, and threaten Tasmania’s energy security,” Minister Duigan said.

“It’s not a policy – it’s a dangerous gimmick.

“They’ve tried it before and it failed.

“Labor’s proposed price cap bears no resemblance to the government’s previous policy which retained the ability to cap wholesale – not retail – prices in circumstances of extreme volatility.

“Underpinning every decision I make as Energy Minister will be keeping Tasmanian power prices the lowest in the nation while ensuring energy security, economic development and creating jobs.

“We are getting on with our long-term plan of increasing Tasmania’s renewable energy supply in a sensible and a responsible manner to serve a growing population, a growing economy, and a community increasing moving towards a low emissions future,” Minister Duigan said.
