Today community members, veterans and school children gathered at Stenhouse Park to pause, remember and commemorate ANZAC Day and those who have served past and present.

Chair of the Rockhampton ANZAC Day Committee Councillor Drew Wickerson said the Stenhouse Park Memorial Service, held the day before the official ANZAC Day ceremonies, lets children focus on the local significance of the Stenhouse Park monument, which was funded by local workers who had no choice but to stay home while others went to war.

“The Service today was beautiful. It shows the honour our community has for those who served and sacrificed for our nation,” Cr Wickerson said.

“Between Council Services and those held by community groups, many events are being held tomorrow for our community members to attend and pay their respects.

“I encourage everyone to attend one of the many services and help keep the ANZAC spirit alive.”

Divisional Councillor Grant Mathers said the ANZAC Day Service held at Stenhouse Park each year holds a special place in the heart of the community.

“I am so thankful to be able to be part of this annual Service and pay my respects to those who have served past and present,” Cr Mathers said.

“Offering this service the day before official ANZAC commemorations has become a tradition for the community and local schools.

“Today we saw Lakes Creek State School, Berserker Street State School, Mount Archer State School, Frenchville State School and St Mary’s Catholic Primary School attend.

“There’s no greater way to honour our ANZACs – and all who followed in their footsteps – than by attending an ANZAC Day service and keeping the ANZAC spirit alive.

“If you were unable to attend the Service today, I hope you can attend a commemorative event tomorrow and take time to pay your respects.”
