Launceston Northern Suburbs Recreational Hub full steam ahead

Nic Street, Minister for Sport and Recreation

Works on the new Launceston Northern Suburbs Recreational Hub has reached an exciting milestone with Tasmanian firm Anstie Constructions awarded the contract to deliver Stage 1.

Stage 1 early works will include demolition, site remediation and limited-service works.

Minister for Sport and Recreation, Nic Street, said that this was an important step on the path to delivering this exciting project for Launceston.

“The Rockliff Liberal Government is delivering on our long term plan by investing in important social infrastructure across Tasmania, and employing Tasmanian companies to deliver the projects.

“Our Government committed $27.5 million over two years for the development of the site, which will be invested along with $15 million from the Federal Government and a further $1.1 million from the City of Launceston,” he said.

“The Hub will deliver Tasmania’s largest multi-purpose community sporting and recreation facility that delivers a long-awaited indoor facility for Launceston’s netball community by providing four dedicated indoor netball courts.

“The development will also deliver three additional multi-use indoor courts for basketball, volleyball and other sports, as well as a designated gymnastics area, rock climbing walls, weightlifting and boxing facilities and an outdoor activity area”, Minister Street said.

Liberal Member for Windermere, Nick Duigan, said that the Hub will give the broader Launceston community a place to thrive.

“With all three levels of Government working in unison, this important development will be the most modern indoor sport and community recreation hub in Tasmania,” he said.

“The Hub will feature a bespoke design guided by several key principles including security and safety, green energy initiatives and the revitalisation of existing buildings.

“Improving access for Tasmanians to local community sport and recreation facilities and providing a safe space to meet and connect is a win for everyone,” Mr Duigan said.

Liberal Member for Bass, Simon Wood echoed these sentiments and reinforced that the Rockliff Liberal Government was doing its part to ensure Tasmanians have access to state-of-the-art facilities.

“We are getting on with building and supporting Tasmanians with places to play, keep fit and stay healthy,” he said.

“We know there is a long way to go to ensure every sport has the space it deserves – which is a long-term plan this Government is very committed to – but this is a fantastic step on this journey.

“The Hub is planned to open to the community in mid to late 2025 and we look forward to providing key updates as they become available,” Mr Wood said.
