The Law Council of Australia welcomes the four new judicial appointments to the Federal Circuit and Family Court (FCFCOA) (Division 1) and the appointment of the Hon Justice Fiona Meagher as President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (AAT), announced today by Attorney-General, Senator the Hon Michaelia Cash.
“Congratulations to Judge Alice Carter, Judge Bruce Smith, and Judge Alister McNab who have been appointed as judges of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia (Division1) in the Melbourne and Newcastle Registries,” Law Council of Australia President, Mr Tass Liveris said.
“We are particularly pleased and proud to see the immediate past President of the Law Council of Australia, Dr Jacoba Brasch QC appointed a Division 1 judge in the Sydney Registry.
“Throughout her career, Jacoba has been a tireless advocate for Australian families and victim-survivors of domestic and family violence. Her knowledge of the law, particularly family law, is immense.
“She has contributed significantly and selflessly to our profession, not the least of which was serving as President of the Law Council of Australia.
“It has been a pleasure to work closely with Dr Brasch QC as a Director and Executive member of the Law Council of Australia.
“I would also like to note the elevation of Justice Meagher who has served at the AAT since 2015, most recently as Deputy President and Division Head of the National Disability Insurance Scheme Division.
“Australians will be well served by these appointees,” Mr Liveris said.
“I would also like to commend the Attorney-General for prioritising appointments to our courts and tribunals, particularly in terms of ensuring timely replacement of retiring judges.”
