Lemon Springs update 2 September

EPA’s cleanup of Lemon Springs continues, with waste removed from 26 of the 32 sites and 11 areas backfilled with clean soil. Acetylene cylinders are being excavated in large volumes, with over 30,000 removed to date. EPA are currently investigating disposal pathways for these cylinders.

An onsite wastewater treatment plant has been commissioned on the site to allow contaminated water to be treated and reused. This will continue to operate throughout the remainder of the project.

Contaminated soil is also continuing to be treated on site, with all safety protocols and processes closely following. There have been 13 soil stockpiles treated to date, which allows the soil to be remediated to a suitable level for reuse onsite and avoids the need for disposal at landfill.

The cleanup project is expected to be completed by mid-2023. EPA will continue to update the community on the progress of the site.
