Liberals’ broken promises on planning hurting Tasmanians

Tasmanian Labor

Nearly a decade after promising “a fairer, faster, cheaper, simpler planning system”, the empty Huntingfield site stands as a stark reminder of the Liberal Government’s failure to deliver, Acting Labor Leader and Shadow Minister for Local Government and Planning Anita Dow said.

“The Liberals promised a single state-wide planning scheme in 2014. Nearly a decade later we still don’t have one,” Ms Dow said.

“Given the current Minister Michael Ferguson’s record I suspect we’ll be waiting a while yet.

“The Liberals plan to fast track affordable housing developments, the Housing Land Supply Act, was passed in 2018 and has delivered very little.

“And the Huntingfield Land Supply Order passed the Parliament in 2019-over three years ago-and there is still not one house to show for it, nor the required associated infrastructure built.

“It’s a mess, frankly.”

Shadow Minister for Housing Ella Haddad highlighted the impact this is having on housing supply and the broader community.

“They have sold out Tasmanians when it comes to planning reform which is massively adding to the housing crisis. This is having dire social and economic consequences,” Ms Haddad said.

“There is no doubt the Liberals’ broken promise on planning reform has contributed to Tasmania’s unprecedented housing crisis.

“Guy Barnett needs to be honest and transparent on what he has planned for the Huntingfield site, if in fact he has any plans at all.

“Locals are right to be feeling let down after all this time and nothing to show for all the Liberals’ promises to deliver housing and infrastructure at Huntingfield.”
