The Hodgman Liberal Government is continuing to fail young Tasmanians in regional areas with its plan to axe a West Coast school bus service.
Labor Members for Braddon Anita Dow and Shane Broad said the Government needs to rule out axing the direct bus service from Zeehan to Mountain Heights High School in 2020.
“This is yet another example of this Government being out of touch with our West Coast communities and the barriers they face each and every day,” Ms Dow said.
“The Government’s Hobart-centric decision making is coming at the expense of some of Tasmania’s most disadvantaged communities.
“Why is it that people of the West Coast have to accept decisions being made in Hobart about services always being taken away from their community?”
Dr Broad said the Hodgman Minority Government needed to give the West Coast a fair go.
“Young people on the West Coast are already dealing with inadequate access to transport and poor weather conditions which often make conditions unsafe,” Dr Broad said.
“For the Government to expect students to spend an extra hour on the road each day to get to school is cruel.
“This decision shows just how little the Government understands the needs of young people in our regional areas.
“Will Hodgman and Michael Ferguson should front up on the West Coast and tell students, families and the local community why they should cop this cut to services.”
