Liberals undermine inclusive principles of new disability scheme

Tasmanian Labor
  • Liberals out of touch with the existing funding shortfalls
  • Schools forced to make decisions that undermine the inclusive principles of new disability scheme
  • $450 million in cuts already hurting Tasmanian schools
  • The Liberals are failing students and teachers by leaving some schools to support more students with less funding.

Shadow Education Minister, Josh Willie, said the Government was out of touch with the existing funding shortfalls that some schools across the state are facing.

“The new disability funding model will be introduced next year leading to more supported students in schools – but today in parliament the Liberals failed to guarantee some students and schools won’t be worse off because of a serious lack of funding to support these students and their needs,” Mr Willie said.

“The first round of Will Hodgman and Jeremy Rockliff’s $450 million budget cuts are already hurting Tasmanian schools.

“Some schools are being forced to make difficult decisions, including whether to top up teacher aide support from their general budgets or cut back other school programs.

“The Liberals are in denial if they think all schools are happy with their funding allocations under the new model.

“Labor supports the new disability funding model but by forcing schools to make these decisions it will result in winners and losers and it will work against the inclusive principles of the new disability scheme.”
