Libs And Labor Leave Learner Driver Mentors Out In Cold

The Greens have today committed to continuing to back Learner Driver Mentor Programs across Tasmania, after it was revealed the Liberals and Labor have both left Learner Driver Mentors out in the cold.

“It is disappointing to learn that neither Liberal nor Labor are prepared to commit to ongoing funding for Learner Driver Mentor Programs across Tasmania.

“Driver Mentor programs operate across the State to support disadvantaged learner drivers of all ages to safely gain their driving licence.

“These programs are essential. They are vital in bridging the gap for eligible low-income drivers who cannot afford paid driving lessons or do not have access to a suitable safe vehicle, supervisory licensed driver, or fuel. The programs operated by Driver Mentoring Tasmania (DMT) cover those drivers who are not reached by the RACT program for drivers aged 16-19.

“DMT has been asking both Liberal and Labor since last year to commit to extending their funding for a further five years beyond the current agreement. Disappointingly, they’ve heard nothing.

“The Greens have a policy to support indexation for funding of community service delivery and longer-term contracts to ensure there is security and capacity to plan for the future.

“The Greens recognise DMT and the extensive and important work that is done in filling the gap where the RACT and other providers cannot deliver. We will work with DMT in the future to fight for the delivery of these vital programs.”
