  • McGowan Government election commitment delivered
  • Premier Mark McGowan and Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery today announced that construction is now under way on the impressive performing arts centre at Belmont City College.

The $5 million investment will see the college’s existing performing arts space receive a complete makeover and expansion.

The new contemporary performing arts centre will have fixed audience seating for 250 people, a stage, green room, foyer and additional storage space.

Existing areas will also receive a modern refurbishment as part of the project.

The construction contract was awarded to Devlyn Construction in March and works commenced in April. The project is expected to be completed in April 2021.

The McGowan Government is investing $452.8 million over this financial year to improve infrastructure in public schools and create jobs.

As stated by Premier Mark McGowan:

“This is a big milestone for an important local election commitment. The new performing arts centre will provide a first-class training ground for budding performers for years to come.

“There’s no doubt this has been a challenging school year for all Western Australian students, and the community’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic has been incredible.

“As we begin the process of economic recovery in WA, it’s important that we continue to invest in our schools to ensure that students are learning in the best possible environment.”

As stated by Education and Training Minister Sue Ellery:

“Belmont City College has fantastic creative arts programs, including a music excellence program and a specialist contemporary drama program.

“Students and staff will be able to take up new opportunities and enhance their teaching and learning once the modern new performing arts facilities are complete.

“We want to make sure we are providing schools with the very best facilities so that students can reach their full potential.”

As stated by Belmont MLA Cassie Rowe:

“With a passion for the arts, I am delighted to see Belmont City College receive this investment to build a state-of-the-art performing arts centre.

“The new performing arts centre will provide both the students and teachers with the space to carry out and teach dance, design, media arts, performing arts and visual arts.

“I can’t wait to see the facilities in ‘action’ next year.

“The school desperately needed an upgrade to their performing arts facility, given Belmont City College provide a specialised drama program, they were not able to accommodate the number of students wanting to participate in their drama courses.

“I’m rapt that students in Belmont will now have a state-of-the-art performing arts facility.”
