Sunshine Coast Council is calling on primary-school aged youngsters to let their creativity shine and produce a video encouraging the community to be disaster ready.
Entries are now open for the Sunshine Coast Get Ready Schools Competition which challenges students to create a short video highlighting the importance of having a “WHAT-IF-PLAN”.
A “WHAT-IF-PLAN” includes a household emergency and evacuation plan, ensuring everyone in a household knows exactly what to do in the event of a disaster.
Sunshine Coast Council Mayor and Local Disaster Management Group Chair Mark Jamieson said disaster preparedness started with our youngest community members, who had already shown great resilience in the current novel coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
“I have been impressed with the aptitude of Sunshine Coast children during the continuing COVID-19 pandemic,” Mayor Jamieson said.
“They are a credit to us all and will likely grow-up with a very clear understanding of the importance of disaster preparation.
“While this health crisis unfolds, we must also ensure our community is well prepared and aware of other disasters, including bushfires, storms and floods, which will continue to impact us now and into the future.
“We know that communities who are well prepared before a disaster occurs, are more resilient and able to recover faster.
“No matter if they are in a virtual or physical classroom, I encourage all our youngsters to get involved with this innovative competition.
“As we know, here on the Sunshine Coast, disasters can strike anytime and anywhere. No one is immune and we all have a role to play when it comes to being prepared.”
The winning entry will be mentored by council’s multi-award-winning disaster management team to take their entry to the next level.
They will work behind the scenes and in front of the camera to deliver their entry concept for council’s 2020 Get Ready television, radio and social media campaign.

The Sunshine Coast community will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite entry in August. Entries are now open and close midnight June 30.
