Get ready for a mesmerising night of art, music and community spirit as the Waring Gardens lagoons come to life with the radiant glow of giant native animal lanterns at the highly anticipated Lights at the Lagoon. The event on 7 October features the theme of “Native River Life by Music & Lantern Light”, promising an unforgettable experience for all attending.
Lights on the Lagoon is a celebration of creativity, unity and mental health awareness, brought to life by the collaborative efforts of local community organisations and proudly supported by the NSW Government’s Reconnecting Regional NSW Community Events Program, Edward River Council and the Deniliquin Mental Health Awareness Group (Deni MHAG).
Deni MHAG member Lourene Liebenberg said the event was part of the Group’s post-COVID initiative, “5 Ways to Wellbeing”, which prompts psychological and emotional health through connectivity, activity, awareness, continuous learning and helping others.
“This event encourages opportunity for our community to stay connected and engaged and to always keep learning,” said Ms Liebenberg.
“Through workshops and music, individuals can continue to learn and grow, positively impacting their mental health.”
Renowned community artist and visionary, Phil Relf, the Artistic Director of IKARA Celebratory Events, will lend his expertise to help community groups creates the mesmerising lanterns that grace the lagoons. He will be on hand to teach the art of lantern making in a series of free workshops in the week leading up to the event. With a background in theatre, media and large-scale puppetry, Phil’s work embodies the essence of direct community engagement.
“I see myself as a community artist first and foremost. My journey has led me to collaborate with diverse communities, creating art that resonates with the collective spirit,” said Mr Relf.
Edward River Council’s Mayor, Cr Peta Betts, said Council was delighted to coordinate the event again this year.
“This is a feel-good event for our community, fostering connection and bringing people together. It has been quite a difficult year for many people and we hope that participating in events like this can help us all relax and have some fun in a beautiful setting.
Our Council staff work so hard to make the natural beauty of the lagoons and gardens a feature of our town and they really are a drawcard for visitors during the day, so it will be lovely to see them all lit up in the evening.”
Lights in the Lagoon will feature a lantern parade, showcasing the creations made during the workshop series. Attendees can also enjoy a family concert from South West Music while indulging in a delicious dinner by the illuminated lagoons.
