New high quality sports lighting at Belmont’s Winter Reserve will help the Belmont Lions Football Netball Club cater for continued growth, while also reducing operational and maintenance costs.
The Lions are among a group of seven City of Greater Geelong tenant clubs that have benefitted with new floodlights from a $2.5 million share of the VictorianGovernment’s CommunitySports Infrastructure Stimulus Program.
The City committed 10 per cent of the total project costs. The lighting at Winter Reserve was officially ‘switched on’ by Member for Geelong Christine Couzens, Kardinia Ward councillor Ron Nelson and Belmont Lions president Mark Edwards on Thursday night.

The Victorian Government’s commitment to Winter Reserve is a boost to football in the Belmont region and will support the Lions in their quest to accommodate night games and extended training opportunities.
The club has seven football teams and eight netball teams and developments of this nature assist Belmont in its capacity to further grow.

The Winter Reserve lighting upgrade would aid the Geelong and District Football Netball League club in attracting and keeping players.
The updated lighting will be particularly appealing to the young boys and girls from Wangala Primary School across the road as the club seeks to build its junior program.
The developments at Winter Reserve will really open up opportunities to extend training and playing time, while being a source of attraction to prospective new players.
Ms Couzens welcomed the installation of the new lights.
Grassroots clubs like the Belmont Lions need and deserve first rate facilities to train and play their sports.
The new lights will help the Belmont Lions Football and Netball Club grow their membership and attract more players, and, importantly, more girls and women to the club.
Along with Winter Reserve, St Albans Recreation Reserve in Thomson, Osborne Park in North Geelong, Grinter Reserve in Newcomb, Evans Reserve in Norlane, St Leonards Lake Reserve in St Leonards and Burdoo Reserve in Grovedale have gained from the sports lighting initiative.
