A calm and supported birth experience can make all the difference.
For Lisa Fitzpatrick, a Yolŋu woman living in Borroloola, that journey meant travelling more than 1,000 km from home to have her baby at Royal Darwin Hospital.
Being away from her husband and children was challenging. With support from her sister-in-law, sister and the Royal Darwin Hospital maternity team, Lisa was able to create the positive birth experience she had hoped for.
‘I had a planned induction as well as a birth plan which was very important to me. Throughout the experience, the midwives and doctors made me feel informed, listened to and included in all decisions regarding my care. I am very grateful to the staff at Royal Darwin Hospital, my sister-in-law and sister for helping make my birth experience such a positive one,’ Lisa said.
Lisa said she felt supported and heard throughout her experience, from using music and essential oils to having respectful conversations about her birth plan.
