Locals have not supported a proposed three per cent pay rise for Councillors after Council put the matter to a public vote.
The increase was originally suggested by the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal, however Councillors opted to let the public decide whether they would receive the pay rise.
A poll was conducted online, via mail, and through Council’s bi-monthly community newsletter in July and August, with 323 respondents voting ‘no’ and 34 voting ‘yes’.
The most prevalent reason for respondents answering ‘no’ was cost of living increases, and the impact of increased Councillor wages being passed onto ratepayers.
Council will consider the results at Wednesday night’s meeting, however Mayor Kennedy said he believed there would be little to discuss.
“The public have clearly spoken on this issue, and this is a perfect example of why it’s important to consult with the community,” he said.
“I think all the Councillors will understand this result, they don’t do the job just for the money and everyone recognises that times are tough at the moment.
“I’m just glad that ratepayers have been given a say on the matter, and their feedback will be central to any decision made at tomorrow night’s meeting.”
